Taliban working to resolve leadership issues
Taliban working to resolve leadership issues

[1]Some high figures of the Taliban militant group are trying to resolve differences in the leadership, raised over the selection of Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansour as the successor supreme leader for Mullah Mohammad Omar, recently announced dead.

Mullah Abdul Manan Niazi who is said to be member of Mullah Omar’s family and former Taliban so-called governor for Herat and Balkh provinces have told Radio Radio Liberty (Azadi Radio) that a major gathering is going be organized for resolving the differences.

“Within the next two or three days, we will hold a major gathering of the ulema (religious scholars),” he said. “They will resolve all our differences swiftly. Their decision will be good for all the Muslim people of Afghanistan and the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (the formal name of the Taliban).” Mullah Niazi is quoted by the news source as saying.

“I hope that all our comrades will sacrifice their ambitions, personal interests, and material gains,”

Differences within the leadership of Taliban sparked speculations the militant group might be divided and or a parallel faction might be formed by those opposing Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansour as the Taliban Emir.

Mullah Niazi accepts that some of the Taliban leaders opposing Mullah Mansour were working on creating another Shur “Council”. However, he says that Mansour is wants reconciliation with fellow leaders.

“We have received indications from Mansour that he is ready for reconciliation with fellow leaders,” Niazi said. “Mansour and his faction and other Taliban members are either ulema or religious students. All of them have learned some tough lessons from the mistakes and blunders the [anti-Soviet] mujahedin committed [in the 1990s].”

The National Unity Government in Afghanistan was hoping to soon reach a peace deal with Taliban after face-to-face talks with the groups representatives in Islamabad. In their first meeting the Afghan government and Taliban delegations agreed to hold next round of talks but this round was postponed to an undetermined time after the chaos occurred within the group’s leadership.
